Tritonman 2021 Update

Dear fellow multisport athletes,

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that Tritonman, originally scheduled for February 13/14th, 2021, is cancelled.

This decision is based upon the following considerations: The San Diego Parks and Recreation office is not issuing large gathering permits. At this time, University of California, San Diego Club Sports programs are not permitted to travel to or host competitions during the winter quarter. Lastly, given that Tritonman attracts over 500 athletes from all across the Western states and includes draft legal racing, it is not possible for us to host the race in a safe manner.

We know many may be itching for a return to racing, but it is the responsibility of our community to practice safe sport and not place undue risk on our friends, family, and coworkers. We are optimistic that a return to safe racing is possible in 2021, but February is too early for our event. A rescheduled date may be chosen for later in 2021, but in either case we look forward to seeing all your smiling faces at Tritonman 2022.

In health,

Tritonman is not just a race, it's an event.
On February 15th and 16th 2020, the UC San Diego Triathlon Team will host the 14th annual Tritonman at the site of history's first modern triathlon. Way back in 1974, the San Diego Track Club put on the Mission Bay Triathlon (consisting of a run-bike-swim-run) right here on Fiesta Island. UCSD is proud to continue that legacy today with Tritonman: a 750m swim, 21K bike, and 5K run. We will have two USAT-Sanctioned races, an Elite Development Draft Legal race on Saturday and a beginner friendly Classic on Sunday.

Tritonman offers one of the only open-water swims before the conference championships on the WCCTC circuit, and we've got the flattest, fastest closed bike course around. We feature collegiate athletes from Arizona and California, local racers from San Diego (recently ranked by as the #1 city in the country for the sport of triathlon), as well as enthusiasts and elites alike from all across the country.

Triathletes come from a lot of different backgrounds, but we’re united in our desire to work hard and improve. We’d like to think that extends to our events, too. Our race is entirely run by student volunteers, from registration to organization and timing- besides the equipment rental, permits, and lifeguards, every dollar we collect in race fees goes to support our team. UCSD Triathlon has grown a lot in recent years, and we’d love to continue bringing new faces to the sport, even in the face of continued university cutbacks.

Throughout the past 14 years, the UCSD Triathlon team has made a commitment to host the most sustainable event possible. As student-athletes, we aim to shape a greener, healthier tomorrow by leading the way to more sustainable athletics and events. We hope to use our position as athletes and role models to make a positive social and environmental impact by choosing sustainability as a priority in every decision we make leading up to Tritonman.
Looking Forward
We want to make our event better and smoother every year. This year, that means better prizes, more coverage of our race, revamped registration, and same-day release of times. And a bigger, better expo! We want your race-day experience to be fantastic: if you’ve got questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Huge thanks to our sponsors!
