Frequently Asked Questions

Is this race beginner friendly?
Yes! Our Classic race on Sunday is perfect for new triathletes. Swimming in the bay makes it easier on folks new to swimming. If you're not yet comfortable swimming open water, we will have swim buddies available to swim with you. The bike and run are both pancake flat (the biggest hill is a speed bump).  Come out and join us for your first triathlon! Please note that our Saturday draft-legal race is for experienced triathletes only.
Will I need a wetsuit?

We highly recommend a wetsuit for the race. Water temperature in Mission Bay in February is typically ~60-62°F.
Is the park pet friendly?
The park allows pets until 9am, after which time pets are prohibited. We ask that you please help us out by following this regulation, as we risk losing our permit for the race due to repeated infractions by spectators in previous years. We love dogs too, but we don't make the rules! Service animals are always welcome.
Where can I park?
There are plenty of parking lots along Mission Bay Drive. Check out our "Getting Here" section for more information!
Can I pick up my packet on race morning?
Yes, you can. Though we encourage all racers to pick up their packets at the race expo on Friday or Saturday. Look at our schedule for more information!
Do you offer any discounts?
Professional triathletes receive a free entry for our draft-legal race on Saturday, and professional paratriathletes receive a free entry for our classic race on Sunday. Additionally, members of the Triathlon Club of San Diego (TCSD), as well as military service members, receive discounted race entries for both our draft-legal and classic races. Please email to receive your discount code.
I forgot to register online, can I still sign up?

Yes, you can register for our classic race at our expo at Moment Bicycles in Liberty Station on Friday from 12pm-7pm or Saturday from 12pm-5pm. We will also offer race-day registration for our classic race on Sunday morning, starting at 5am. Note that prices are higher for registration at packet pickup and on race day, so we encourage you to register online to avoid the hassle and save money! Online registration closes Thursday Feb 13 at 11:59pm.
What if it rains?
Tritonman will be held rain or shine. While San Diego is lucky to have warm weather year-round, winter storms do happen. The City of San Diego issues a water quality alert for all beaches and bays for 72 hours after significant rainfall, due to elevated bacteria levels. This would require us to cancel our swim, and convert the race into a duathlon (run-bike-run). In case of minor/moderate rainfall, we may still be able to host our swim depending on bacteria levels, and we will keep this website updated accordingly. Ultimately, this will be up to the discretion of the county water monitoring department, the lifeguards, and the race director, and we ask that you please respect their decision. Cross your fingers for dry weather!
Why can't I find the registration link for the draft-legal race?

Registration for our draft-legal race on Saturday requires approval from the race committee, due to the competitive nature of the race and limited number of spots available. Please go to our draft-legal page for more information to register. Once approved, athletes will receive a unique registration link via email.
Who does this race benefit?

Tritonman is proudly hosted by the UC San Diego triathlon team. All proceeds go directly to the team to help purchase new equipment, and to provide athletes discounted race entry fees to races within California as well as Collegiate Nationals.

Can I get a refund or transfer my registration to another athlete?
Yes! We honor refunds until January 30, 2019 at 5pm. We will honor transfers until February 10, 2019 at 5pm.
